For David, style is a way to shape his world. As co-founder of Marigold, he creates a universe in which everything revolves around experience, from the flavor in the glass to the details of his suit. His story is that of someone who sees aesthetics not as a luxury, but as a given.
From hobby to our own universe
“Fifteen years ago we started as students making cocktails for friends. That grew into Miraeus, a catering company with which we worked at events all over Belgium. Until then everything was à la tête du client, according to the customer's taste. But after ten years we wanted something that was truly ours. No longer following other people's tastes, but telling our own story. That's how Marigold came to be.”
“Marigold refers to the marigold, or Mary's Gold. It was the gold that poor people donated to the church: rich people donated gold, poor people marigolds. And because Antwerp is the city of Our Lady, that link felt right. It sounds international, exudes grandeur, but aside from that it's also just a very beautiful word.”
A healthy workaholic
“I realize every day that I have the luxury of doing what I love. There are many people for whom work is an obligation, but for me it is a passion. A full agenda makes me happy, being busy with what I am building. Even while traveling, I find it difficult not to be occupied with my work.”
“I have the luxury of doing what I love, and I realize that every day.”
“I am passionate about everything related to taste, in the broadest sense of the word. From world cuisines to culture, everything associated with it intrigues me. In the cocktail world we create, it all comes together, and we come into contact with interesting people, including customers, each with their own story and knowledge. It is the world I want to live in, and I count myself lucky that I get to do this every day.”

“The pieces I buy should still be something I can wear with just as much confidence five years from now."
Investing in style
“My style is a deliberate nonchalance: stylish, relaxed, and with a certain discretion. I like timeless garments, loose-cut suits, a shirt with a camp collar, a vintage pair of sunglasses. My wardrobe conveys that I know what is beautiful and that I have a feel for it, but I don’t need to rub that in anyone’s face. It’s not really tied to contemporary trends, but at the same time it is fashion.”
“The pieces I buy should still be something I can wear with just as much confidence in five years. I therefore really see building a wardrobe as an investment. A healthy lifestyle also goes with that: I work out and eat healthy. I see it as a nice motivation: you stay sharp, for yourself and for your clothes.”

From a Tuesday outfit to gala
“The tuxedo was a solution I hadn't expected when we started with the moodboard. But it makes sense, because I wanted a suit that I could wear for special occasions, where you're allowed to stand out a bit. A tuxedo is perfect for that, and it also boosts your confidence. When I wear my tuxedo, I feel very important, you know: it will be an evening to remember.”
“The other suit fits my daily life very well. It's a suit that I can wear on a Tuesday afternoon. I can wear it to a meeting, to a wedding, or to brunch, it's just very versatile. You can dress it up with jewelry or another pair of shoes, but at its core it's a suit that always works.”
